  • What should I look for in a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist?
The British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Therapies (BABCP) outlines minimum training standards, which can be helpful when choosing a CBT Therapist. A Postgraduate Diploma in CBT should have been completed, with supervised clinical practice throughout. Don't be afraid to discuss your therapist's qualifications with them! Your therapist should always have a supervisor, with whom they meet regularly. It is important for therapists to have a qualified and experienced supervisor supporting them in working effectively, safely, and ethically.
  • Will everything I tell my therapist be confidential?
In most cases, yes. Confidentiality is an important part of building trust with your therapist. But there are some exceptions, which help your therapist work responsibly: Your therapist's supervisor Therapists always discuss clients regularly with a supervisor, who also has to keep your confidence. This person should be another experienced therapist. It is unethical for a therapist to work without supervision. This is because: It helps your therapist look after their own mental health, so they're better able to support you It means someone else is aware of how your therapist is treating you, to make sure it's appropriate Your safety If your therapist believes that you're at serious risk of harming yourself or someone else, they may need to inform your GP, a healthcare professional or someone else. They should tell you first if they're going to do this.
  • What is a Mental Health MOT?
Sometimes we go through events or experiences that leave us questioning whether we are coping in an effective way. Some expert input can be an invaluable way to guide you back on track towards a healthier future, or provide some much-needed reassurance in instances of uncertainty. The 60 minute Mental Health MOT is a one-off appointment to discuss your current worries, coping strategies, routines or behaviours and have some guidance on ways to improve or change how you are dealing with situations. It is much easier to intervene at an early stage before short-term coping strategies become long-term habits that you cannot function without. Over the course of an hour, we will discuss any issues, questions or worries that are concerning you. We will then build a personalised formulation together using CBT-based skills. I will also provide you with guidance on specific techniques to implement, if needed, to help prevent possible future issues arising. This session is for individuals who feel confident in their abilities to implement advice given without the need for ongoing support and is available online via video call or in-person at The CBT Space in Exmouth. Although this is offered as a singular appointment, it is recommended to check-in for a mental health MOT every 6-12 months.
  • How old do I need to be to book an appointment?
At present, I only offer appointments to those over 18 years of age.
  • Do I have to book an initial consultation?
No, if you feel you have gathered enough information either through direct contact with me, or through my website, then you are able to book a full session straight away.
  • What should I expect from my initial consultation?
I offer a free 15-minute appointment, via telephone or in-person, so that you can get to know a bit about me and how I work, and also for me to find out about your current worries and concerns. This helps me to assess whether CBT will be the right fit for your particular needs, difficulties and abilities and allows you to make an informed decision on your treatment. As well as collecting some initial demographic information, we will also discuss what you feel you would like to address in therapy - what your expectations are and how much you know about CBT. If we decide that CBT would be an appropriate treatment for you, I will ask you to complete a full informed consent form, which outlines the terms & conditions for undertaking therapy at The CBT Space. I will also ask you to complete an initial intake form, outlining some general background information, to save time within our first session.

You can contact me via the form on my contact page: Or call / text: +447762838750 Email: sian@thecbtspace.com Alternatively, you can book sessions online via my book now service:
  • What will our sessions look like?
In CBT, we work together to identify and challenge negative thought patterns and behaviour. CBT is structured and is problem focused, solution oriented. Sessions will have mutually agreed upon objectives that are designed to help you feel better and get you closer to achieving your therapy goals. A typical CBT session may include: Working through exercises with your therapist to explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviour. Agreeing some activities to work on in your own time. Going over what you did in previous sessions and discussing what progress you’ve made.
  • How often will I see my therapist?
This is entirely up to you, based on your needs, wants and finances. I offer one-off Mental Health MOTs but also provide ongoing interventions and support, from 6-20 sessions or longer.
  • Where are sessions held?
I offer face-to-face sessions at my private therapy room in Exmouth, Devon. Alternatively, I offer telephone or video call sessions at a time and place convenient for you, whilst remaining safe and secure. This means that you have flexibility to be anywhere you like for sessions, as long as you're in a private space free of distractions.
  • How many sessions will I need?
This will depend on your individual needs and is flexible to suit you. Most clients attend around 12-20 sessions in total. Some attend as little as 6-8 and there are some clients I work with over a longer period of time if their problems are more complex or longstanding, or they wish to put change in place at a slower pace. I also have a number of clients who will choose to access check-in sessions with me every few months to ensure they are staying on track.
  • Do sessions have to last for an hour?
No, I am more than happy to adjust session lengths to your needs & abilities. Some clients prefer a 45-minute session (for £45) and I also offer 30-minute sessions for £30. Please get in touch to discuss your requirements.
  • How much does a session cost?
£60 for one hour. A free 15 minute initial consultation is available to assess your suitability for CBT and to discuss any individual needs.
  • How do I pay for my session?
Sessions can be paid for at the time of booking, via debit / credit card or Apple / Google Pay. Payment is also accepted on the day of your appointment via cash, bank transfer or card payment.
